Cousin Hugo's History

The story behind the legend of how we got our name

Cousin Hugo's History

The story behind the legend of how we got our name

Cousin Hugo's Story

In the days following the repeal of Prohibition, there were many municipalities that did not allow the sale of alcohol. Such was the case in Webster Groves, Mo. Since it was not possible to stop at the corner bar, citizens from all social classes found other ways of obtaining libations. With no bar at hand, it caused them to be more creative in their description and their source.

Many in the know would make a stop at Katz's drugstore, seek out their favorite clerk, and ask for a pint of their "Special Medicine" (which was hidden behind the counter). It was a profitable venture, but was of necessity a clandestine affair, which limited the scale of the operation.

In the 1930s Hugo Western acquired the current property, which had served as a wayside stop for many years. Originally a blacksmiths and then a gas station, it's location had remarkable potential for someone with entrepreneurial vision.

Since it was located outside the boundary of Webster Groves in Maplewood, Hugo was able to serve food and drink to those who happened by. Hugo was aware of the community's desire for Medicine and hired the clerk away from the drugstore to work in his establishment.

When the clerk met any of his previous Patients, he would introduce Mr. Western to them as "My Cousin, Hugo". Eventually the customers began calling the roadhouse Cousin Hugo's and the name stuck.

Then as now, Cousin Hugo's serves customers from all walks of life a menu of roadhouse favorites in a comfortable and casual atmosphere. From our changing list of appetizers to our fabulous Braunschweiger sandwich and world renowned hamburgers, it is good honest food that goes great with a beer.

Thanks for stopping in!
